op Despite an eight-day layoff for the holidays, the Meridian Lady Jackets picked up right where they left off in the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball season by extending their winning streak to six straight. But most importantly, the Lady Jackets remained undefeated in District 201A competitions with two big wins last week.

Cubs build momentum for district

Despite being a little out of sync returning from the 12-day holiday break, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team rediscovered its winning ways with backto- back victories in four days in preparation of the District 17-3A opener this week. Snapping a five-game losing streak, the Cubs finished strong to post a hard-fought 49-46 road victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs last Friday, before building some momentum with a solid 4837 win over the Rio Vista Eagles at home Monday afternoon in the Clifton High School Gymnasium.

Using a strong showing at the Rio Vista Lady Eagle Tournament coming out of the holiday break Dec. 2729, the Clifton Lady Cubs opened District 17-3A competition looking poised and ready to make a run at the title.

Iredell dominates all-district picks

After an undefeated run through their opponents to capture the District 12-1A, Division II title, the 12th-ranked Iredell Dragons fittingly dominated the all-district selections as well by sweeping the superlative awards. Led by the District 12-1A, DII Coach of the Year Luis Guereca, Iredell sophomore Cole Heutzenroeder was named the district’s Offensive Most Valuable Player, sophomore Caleb Garland drew the Defensive Most Valuable Player award, while freshman Gavin Vara was named the Newcomer of the Year.

Coming off 10 days without taking the court for a game, Christmas came early for the Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball team. Opening District 20-1A competition before taking another seven days off for the holidays, Meridian knocked off the Walnut Springs Hornets, 58-36, last Tuesday in Yellowjacket Gymnasium.

Before heading home for the holidays, the Meridian Lady Jackets still had some unfinished business to take care of in the midst of the first round of District 20-1A competition. Bringing a little more cheer to their Christmas celebration, the Lady Jackets extended their district opening winning streak to three straight by stinging the Walnut Springs Lady Hornets, 46-21, last Tuesday in Yellowjacket Gymnasium to remain undefeated in District 20-1A play going into an eight-day break for the holidays.

Kopperl recognized for turnaround

By finishing second to the District 10-1A, Division II champion Blum Bobcats, the surprising Kopperl Eagles clinched their first trip to the postseason since 2018. And after doing so, the Eagles were rewarded with accolades for their success.

Winning seven of their last nine games, the Cub enjoyed an extended 12-day break by carrying some momentum into the Christmas holidays.
