Proving that battling through a tough non-district and tournament schedule would payoff with hard work and determination, the Meridian Lady Jacket girls basketball team came together to begin notching victories at just the right time. Shocking the defending District 20-1A champion Blum Lady Bobcats, the Lady Jackets came-from-behind in the second half to pull off a dramatic 42-41 overtime win in the district opener last Tuesday.

Coming off a strong performance at the Santo Tournament Dec. 7-9, the Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball team anticipated an opportunity to build some momentum going into the holiday break this week. But some time off from action on the court came a little earlier than expected.

After taking the football program in the right direction and working hard to improve throughout the 2023 Texas high school football regular season, the Meridian Yellowjackets were rewarded for their efforts when All-District 10-2A, Division II selections were announced this week. Playing in the same district with perennial powerhouse and the 2023 Class 2A, DII state finalist Mart Panthers, the Jackets faced some of the best teams in the state in their own district during the regular season.

After winning four of their last six games, the Clifton Lady Cubs look to carry some momentum into a seven-day holiday break. Led by a 17-point performance from senior Brianna Gonzalez, the Lady Cubs held off the surging Hamilton Lady Bulldogs for a hard-fought 59-55 non-district victory last Tuesday at the Clifton High School Gymnasium.

Winning seven of their last nine games, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team will enjoy an extended break by carrying some momentum into the Christmas holidays. But after splitting two games last week against quality opponents, the Cubs are already looking forward to getting back to action in preparation for a tough District 17-3A battle.

With a new head coach leading the way, the Meridian Lady Jackets have been experiencing some growing pains in the early part of the 2023-24 Texas high school girls basketball season. But while wins have been hard to come by, the level of competition has certainly had something to say about that.

By finishing second to the District 10-1A, Division II champion Blum Bobcats, the surprising Kopperl Eagles clinched their first trip to the postseason since 2018. And after doing so, the Eagles were rewarded with accolades for their success.

Winning seven of their last nine games played over a 10-day period, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team built on a third place finish at the Dublin Tournament recently by winning three straight at the highly-competitive Hamilton Tournament before losing in the championship game last weekend. Facing Class 4A Lampasas in the title tilt, the Cubs fell behind early, battled back to take a lead into the fourth period before the Badgers responded in the final frame to take home the trophy.

After playing seven games in 11 days packed full of court action, the Clifton Lady Cubs will have a chance to catch their breath this week as they play two more games over the next 12 days in preparation for District 17-3A competition.

After coming up just short of capturing back-to-back trips to the Class 3A state playoffs, the still young Clifton Cubs enter the 2023-24 Texas high school boys basketball season with the experience and drive to compete for the postseason.
