Neal D. McDowell, age 84, of Clifton, formerly of Red Oak, passed away Monday morning, November 8, 2021, at the Goodall Witcher Wellness Center in Clifton.

Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 12, 2021, at the First Baptist Church in Clifton, with Rev. Nick Harris officiating.  Burial will follow at Clifton Memorial Park.  The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Clifton. 

Neal was born September 25, 1937, in Springlake, Texas, the son of Neal and Ella (Miller) McDowell.  He attended schools in Hale Center and was a 1956 graduate of Hale Center High School where he was nominated for the NHS All American Football Team 1955.  He then received a bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Texas in 1960, where he ran track and excelled in the hurdles.  On May 30, 1964, he was united in marriage to Linda Warren in Meridian.  Neal was a faithful member of the Ovilla Road Baptist Church and then the First Baptist Church in Clifton, where he sang in the choir, served as a Deacon, and taught Sunday School.  He was the financial troubleshooter for E-Systems in Dallas for over 23 years before retiring in 1990.  He then worked for the United States Chamber of Commerce and Banker's Life Insurance Company.  Neal enjoyed visiting with friends, fishing, singing, farming, ranching, working on his bulldozer, and teaching and reading his Bible.  He was a member of Gideon's International, the Bosque County Republican Club, the Bosque Arts Center, Bosque Museum and the Bosque Chorale.  Neal loved spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.  He never met a stranger and always had a hug for everyone.

Neal is preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Burney and Mona Warren; his brother, Garry McDowell; his sisters-in-law, Jonnie Payne and Betty Alexander; and brothers-in-law, Burney Warren Jr, Bill Warren, Buddy Alexander, Buddy Brantley, Alvin Payne and Marty Clifford.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Linda McDowell of Clifton; his son, David McDowell and wife B.J. of Clifton; his daughter, Shannon Thaxton and husband Jeff of Sequim, WA; grandsons, Michael Neal McDowell, Dayton James McDowell, and Jax Thaxton; a brother, Gerald McDowell and wife Joyce; sisters-in-law, Ellen McDowell, Patsy Clifford, Peggy Brantley, Lola Warren, and Joyce Warren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers are Michael McDowell, Dayton McDowell, Jax Thaxton, Lalo Reyes, Phillip Mitchell, Jerry Wall, Tom Duckworth, Ron Bowlin and Ronnie Cosper.  Honorary pallbearers are members of Gideon's International.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon's International.
