In 1941, when Mary was sixteen years old, the government took the Hendrix homestead to later build part of Fort Hood. Mary was baptized in Cowhouse Creek behind Pidcoke Baptist Church when she was 10 years old, attended school in Pidcoke and also attended Grace Memorial Church in Clifton.

Mary and R.B. married in Gatesville November 3, 1944. R.B. was stationed at Fort Hood and was later sent to San Antonio, then to Corpus Christi. After leaving the army they lived all over southern Texas, moving from one oil rig to another. They moved to their place outside of Clifton in 1956. They owned and operated Gibbs Manufacturing and Gibbs Trophy Company in Cranfills Gap in 1969. Mary worked at the factory and later as postmaster at the Cranfills Gap Post Office.
