Joe was born on Jan. 29, 1944, in Henderson. Joe grew up and attended school in Hillsboro. He married Nancy Jane Mitchiner on March 8, 1963. Shortly after getting married Joe joined the Army.

He proudly served his country for four years, with 18 months of those in Germany as a Military Policeman and two years in the Army Reserve.

Joe and Nancy lived in Bosqueville and China Springs before moving to Meridian with their children. Joe worked for the United States Postal Service for 41 years. He became Postmaster in Meridian in 1981 where he served until his retirement in 2007.

As a younger man, Joe enjoyed hunting, boating and riding motorcycles. Joe enjoyed shooting guns and re-loading his ammunition. He collected coins, enjoyed watching Old Westerns and telling stories of his childhood. After retirement, Joe became “The Can Man” riding his four-wheeler and UTV up and down the county road where he loved picking up aluminum cans.

He did this until his health prevented him from doing it any longer.

Even then he would drive to town every day to make his daily stops at the local stores to pick up a few things and mostly visit with the people inside.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; parents, Seth and Nettie Wood; and brothers, Jay and Don Wood.

Joe is survived by his three children, Mike Wood and wife Shirley, James Enriquez and husband Chuck and daughter, Jennifer Speer and husband Joey; grandchildren, Will Speer and wife Mackenzie, Jakob Wood and fiancé Natalie, Emily Winder and husband Trevlyn and Stephanie Law; and great-grandchildren, Jensen Speer and Carter Law.

Pallbearers will be Mike Wood, Joey Speer, Will Speer, Jakob Wood, Carlos Enriquez and Trevlyn Winder.

Joe will be dearly missed by family, but it gives us great peace knowing that

He has made it back home to spend eternity with our precious mom, other family members and our Savior. Oh what a reunion and glorious day for him.
