Edwin (Ed) Harold McMahon, Jr.

Edwin (Ed) Harold McMahon, Jr. “Poppi”, of Clifton, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022. Ed was a man deeply devoted to his faith, his family and his friends, and leaves a tremendous void in the many hearts who loved him.

Born on December 13, 1947, in Chicago, IL, Ed was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1969, and served in Vietnam as a decorated naval officer. After his service, he went into the oil business which brought him to one of the great loves of his life, the state of Texas.

After more than 40 years, Ed considered himself a true Texan. For the last 12 years, he lived in Laguna Park and spent his days surrounded by a community of dear friends and neighbors. Whether fishing on Lake Whitney, attending Bible study groups, having dinner at each other’s homes, or simply enjoying perfect sunsets over the lake, Ed truly loved this close-knit community.

Another community important to him was that of his church. Ed was a man of deep faith and was an active member of his congregation. He carried out many acts anonymously as serving others was one of his biggest gifts. He encouraged everyone to do better and serve the Lord. His faith guided him to lead by example for the entire community. He spent many years volunteering at Cook Children’s Hospital in Ft. Worth and more recently, Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco.

His joy and zest for life were evident. Even into his 70s, he reigned number one in his age group in racquetball. There was not a model plane or train he did not want to build, fly or run. His competitiveness was legendary, and the plaques for family ping pong, pool, foosball and air hockey tournaments prove it. Ed was a true kid at heart, which made him an extremely fun friend, Dad, and Poppi, as he was called by his eight grandchildren.

To Ed, nothing was more important or brought more joy and pride than his family. Ed’s children and grandchildren meant everything to him, as they were so often told, and Poppi was dearly loved wholeheartedly.

All of the above makes his unexpected passing so heartbreaking. Ed was preceded in death by his sister, Kathryn “Kit” Fulgenzi. He is survived by his children, Heather Wadia (Cyrus Wadia); Eddie McMahon (Ana McMahon), Kelly Crain (Josh Crain), and Shannon Scott; and his eight beloved grandchildren, Ty, Mallory, Mia, Xerxes, Alek, Finnian, Marin, and Knox.

A visitation with the family will be held at Lawson Funeral Home in Meridian on Thursday, February 3 from 5-7 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Meridian on Friday, February 4 at 11 a.m. Lunch will be provided in the church Family Life Center immediately after the service.
