After surviving a gauntlet of state-ranked teams, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball squad turns its focus on the home stretch of matches with a berth to the Class 3A postseason in sight. Hoping to snap a three-match losing streak against three of the best teams in the state perched at the top of District 17-3A, the Lady Cubs travel to Whitney to take on the Lady Wildcats at 7 p.m.

While the defending District 12-1A, Division II champion Morgan Eagles remained idle with an open date, the Battle for the Bosque began last Friday night. And after being unable to finish the season in 2020, the surprising Cranfills Gap Lions established themselves as a team to be reckoned with in the all-Bosque County six-man football league.

Sometimes, the first win of the season can be the hardest to achieve. And certainly, that proved to be true for the Meridian Yellowjackets during the 2021 Texas high school football season. So after the Class 2A, Division II Jackets stunned the Waco Texas Wind in the second half to pull away for a convincing 47-19 victory on Meridian’s homecoming last Friday night, victory has seldom been sweeter.

Despite doubling the thrill of victory this season, the Meridian Lady Jacket volleyball team hopes it’s just the beginning of more to come. Looking to add to the win column after notching their first District 11-2A win of the 2021 Texas high school volleyball season, that’s exactly what they got.

In a game that became the tale of two halves, it proved to be too little, too late for the Clifton Cubs. After falling behind 34-7 before halftime, the Cubs battled back to rally in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the Rogers Eagles secured a 41-28 victory in the District 13-3A, Division II clash Friday night at Cub Stadium.

In the tail end of playing five consecutive matches on the road, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball team saw its fourmatch winning streak in District 17-3A competition finally come to an end. But it took 11th-ranked Troy to be enough to bring the road weary Lady Cubs down as the Lady Trojans marched to a convincing three-set sweep, 25-13, 25-7, 25-19, despite Clifton’s attempt to battle back in the third set last Friday afternoon.

After enduring a winless week, the Bosque County sixman football teams rebounded to notch a few victories last Thursday and Friday nights before heading into District 12-1A, DII action this week. Certainly, nothing has turned out as expected among the all-Bosque County league during the non-district schedule as injuries left each team playing shorthanded as some point in the early going.

After experiencing the agony of defeat in an unprecedented week of disappointment, the all-Bosque County District 12-1A, Division II goes into one more round of non-district games without a single squad owning a winning record.

For the Class 2A, Division II Meridian Yellowjackets, it proved to be a case of everything that could go wrong did. And in a nondistrict game against the Class 2A, DI Axtell Longhorns, it began going wrong shortly after the opening kickoff last Friday night at Jacket Stadium.

One is never enough. And after getting their first taste of victory in District 11- 2A volleyball competition last week, the Meridian Lady Jackets want more.
