While the Class 1A, Division II’s 25thranked Cranfills Gap Lions enjoyed an open date last week while at the top of the District 12-1A, DII standings, the all-Bosque County league’s other four teams battled for positioning to make a run at a postseason berth.

Getting an open week in the 2021 Texas high school football schedule could not have come at a better time for the Meridian Yellowjackets as they get ready for the stretch run in the District 8-2A, Division race.

As we all know, growing pains come and go. For the young and inexperienced Meridian Lady Jackets volleyball program, learning lessons on the court in the real time of a game can be tough at times. And certainly, the Lady Jackets suffered the agony of defeat last week.

It may have been a long time coming, but when the Clifton Cubs finally claimed their first victory of the 2021 Texas high school football season, it proved well worth the wait. And during Homecoming Night at Cub Stadium, the thrills and chills along the way gave the hometown faithful plenty to cheer about.

On the brink of claiming their first playoff berth in eight years, the Clifton Lady Cubs volleyball team left no doubt they’re deserving as they swept past the McGregor Lady Bulldogs, 25-17, 25-11, 25-12, for a convincing District 17-3A victory, wrapping up a week that saw back-to-back wins.

After winning the District 12-1A, Division II title in 2019, the Cranfills Gap Lions just barely survived numerous injuries and COVID shutdowns to complete the unprecedented 2020 Texas high school football season. With that in mind, most prognosticators did not expect the Lions to challenge for a playoff berth, let alone the district crown.

Coming off their first win of the season, the Meridian Yellowjacket opened District 8-2A, Division II competition against the defending district champion Albany Lions. And not only were the Jackets facing the pre-season favorites to repeat, they were taking on the fourth-ranked team in the state.

Facing two of the best team District 11-2A has to offer last week, the Meridian Lady Jacket volleyball team got a taste of where they want to go. And with that goal established, the Lady Jackets turn their sights on notching more wins this week.

FLORENCE -- In a back-and-forth battle for momentum throughout the game, the Clifton Cubs could not find enough magic to produce their first win of the season. And in the process, the Florence Buffaloes rallied to race past the Cubs, 39-30, in a District 13-3A, Division II showdown last Friday night at Stampede Stadium.
