And after the Kopperl Eagles won their first game in three seasons, all five Bosque teams have put a notch in the win column through the first two weeks of the 2022 Texas high school football season.

Brett Voss The Sports Buzz On the road to recovery, the Class 2A, Division II Meridian Yellow Jackets began working toward restoring their once proud football program to a place of prominence as the 2022 Texas high school football season turned on the Friday night lights. But traveling to Itasca proved to be a tough way to open the season last Friday night when the Wampus Cats handed the Jackets a convincing 58-0 loss as Meridian’s new head coach Jim Kerbow returned to the school he had served the previous three seasons.

Opening the 2022 Texas high school football season with a slate of impressive showings, three of the five Bosque County six-man squads posted dominating victories. CRANFILLS GAP66 BYNUM 21 BYNUM – Junior Adan Flores rushed for six touchdowns and junior Blake Allenaddedthreemorescores as the Class 1A, Division II’s 21st-ranked Cranfills Gap Lions roared past the favored Bynum Bulldogs, 66-21, on the road last Friday night.

New Beginnings - Cubs open season with 20-12 victory over Merkel

After three weeks of practice and two scrimmages serving as dress rehearsals, the Class 3A, Division II Clifton Cubs will open the 2022 Texas high school football season with a new head coach and a renewed enthusiasm to return to the playoffs. Despite playing football since 1919, Clifton will begin its quest by facing the Merkel Badgers for the first time as alum and first-year head coach Brent Finney will lead the Cub onto the field playing at a neutral site in Cisco at 7 p.m. Thursday at Chesley Field. “We are playing at a neutral site because of the distance,” Finney said. “We like where we are heading into the opener against Merkel. Our kids are playing physical and with a lot of energy on both sides of the ball.” Much like the Cubs, Merkel struggled last season while winning only one district game and the Badgers enter 2022 picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine to finish last in District 5-3A, Division II. But second-year head coach Will Kates returned 15 lettermen from last year’s young squad, including seven offensive and five defensive starters.
