The Lady Cubs hosted an exciting game against the Whitney Wildcats Friday evening, leaving the court with a 3-0 win.
Clifton was fired up and ready to play during set one. Several over the net plays by Brianna Gonzalez helped the Lady Cubs rack up points early against the Wildcats. Well placed serves and teamwork on the court throughout the match helped secure them a 25-12 win.
Set two saw Whitney struggle to return the ball, but the Lady Cubs struggled to put points on the board as well. Ava Anderson had some knock-out serves and she and her teammates decided they wanted the win more, coming out of the set with a 25-16 win over the Wildcats.
Set three could have been anyone’s set at any point as the scored remained a couple points apart the entire set. It was clear Whitney wasn’t letting go without a fight, and even held the lead late in the set, but an injury to a player and a turnover on the court caught them faltering. The Lady Cubs were able to put some more points on the board, making the score 26-25 Clifton, before turning the ball back over to Whitney. The Wildcats added one more point to their name before the ball went back to the Lady Cubs for the final two points of the set, making it a 28-26 win for the set and a 3-0 win for the game.
This win was especially emotional for the Lady Cubs as it was their last home game of the season. They were to play at McGregor on Tuesday and are scheduled to play at 6 p.m. in Riesel next Tuesday, Oct. 20.
