Remembering Halloweens Past 2023

Body
It’s October, so there are thoughts of FallFest, Halloween, and “Deer Day” – as I call the start of deer season. On Bosque County Halloween’s Past, I’ve attended parties with friends, helped hand out candy on Main Street, and occasionally donned a costume.

Supposedly Fall 2023

Body
I t must be fall. The obvious tipoffs were the leaves covering our yard, decks, and pastures. They started falling early this year because of the intense heat and drought. Fall Fest is coming. We’ve had a few cool nights and even some cooler days– even a little rain! Thank goodness! What a relief!

Religiosity

Body
D uring the first 500 years AD, several sects of Gnostics argued that the Apostles got it all wrong. They claimed that Jesus was neither the long-awaited Jewish messiah nor was he a new revelation of the Old Testament God.

Fall 2023

S easons change. Because of extreme heat and drought, leaves started dropping too early this year. Of all my flowering plants, only lantana seems to have perked up and bloomed after the scant rain we finally received. My lilac bushes managed three puny blossoms. Even zinnias look dead, and my big honeysuckle vine’s pitiful. Obedient plants have thinned to almost nothing. Four o’clocks, morning glories, cannas, liatris, altheas, and other things are stunted or barely alive. We lost most of our St. Augustine grass, roses, and annuals. Even the black bamboo looks dead. All my exhausting watering wasn’t enough. What the heat and drought didn’t get, the caterpillars, deer, and grasshoppers ate. Then there was the scorching heat of the wildfire behind our house that came into the back yard. Pretty sure it took a mountain laurel and several fruit trees. I hope at least some of these things we tended so carefully for so many years will come back next spring.

Walking & biking & stick horses

So I got an electric bicycle. If you asked for my thoughts on e-bikes a year ago, I’d have yelled, “Lame!” Six months ago, I was hunting for an affordable electric car or truck.

Religiosity

Although that looks like the title of a college Freshman introductory course to Christianity, actually it is the signal that we are returning to our review of the dawn of Christianity beginning with how it stood in the year 101 AD. The situation was grim.

Paxton acquitted on all impeachment counts

K en Paxton has been reinstated as Texas Attorney General after the Texas Senate on Saturday acquitted him of charges of bribery and misuse of office. Only two Republican senators joined the 12 Democrats in voting to convict him of some of the 16 charges heard by the Senate, with four other charges dismissed by the Senate, The Dallas Morning News reported.
