Columns & Opinions

Painting, caulking and Benadryl

Body
I should have added something to the column I wrote about my resurrected computer transplant. I should have admitted that if my phone had crashed, I wouldn’t know my own children’s phone numbers. Why bother memorizing them ---says my brain--- if I can just punch a button or choose a name. Too easy.

Gas prices at highest level since 2014

Body
As Texans hit the roads this summer with pandemic restrictions eased and vaccinations widespread, the national average price of gas is expected to top $3 per gallon, though the average in Texas for regular is $2.799, according to AAA. Drivers should expect prices to keep rising as demand rises, according to the Consumer Energy Alliance.

New computer, back in business

Body
I’ve been without computer, scanner and printer since June 9. Time flies around here, but in this instance, the being without a computer kind of time seemed to drag on for years. It would have been a comedy of errors if I hadn’t feared the very real possibility of losing twenty years of columns and other saved writing/ manuscripts, family histories and nine years of cartoons and comic strips. Yes, I thought the backup was working. No, it wasn’t. Yes, that was stupid of me not to realize it. Being computerless was inconvenient for many reasons.

Eggs for sale

Body
When I opened the fridge in the break room of our office one particularly rainy morning last May, I was shocked to find it packed with carts of eggs that had taken over the space without order or remorse. I gently left my lunchbox on the table and before I had a chance to ask the ladies for an explanation, one was promptly delivered by our manager who had seen in my face the unmistakable sign of a question mark.

KLEINE FAMILY REUNION

Body
The Kleine Family Reunion was held Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the Cayote Community Center. Family members are descendants of Henry and Hedwig Kleine who settled near Cayote in 1910. The first reunion was held in July, 1974. There was not a reunion in 2020. The reunion for 2021 was a celebration of the 90th birthdays of Raymond Whitney on the 23rd of March and Clara Dee Kleine Bronstad on the 24th of April and a celebration of the life of Jean Whitney Wortham. Sharon Whitney did an excellent job in making all the arrangements and preparations for the reunion. Everyone enjoyed a potluck lunch, visiting with ones they haven’t seen in a while, remembering past reunions and family members who are no longer with us and find out information about the ones who could not attend the reunion this year.

When it rains, it pours

Body
Have ya ever just had one of those days? I‘m not referring to health issues and deep loss, much more serious categories. I mean break downs and failures of appliances, vehicles and technology. Occasionally we hit a bad patch where several things give up simultaneously. This spring’s been no exception. Perhaps we were overdue.

Heat wave prompts conservation call

Body
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas urged Texans to cut back on power usage last week when an unusually large number of power plants shut down for unexpected repairs as temperatures soared. ERCOT officials announced Friday that Texans could resume normal levels of electricity use, however.

Fair and Rodeo nostalgia

Body
By the time you read this, another Fair and Rodeo will have come and gone. This annual event is one of those things that marks and divides time. It’s something a large portion of our community enjoys and is involved in. After 20 plus years back in Bosque County, we’ve attended plenty of these.
