CLIFTON — Clifton Youth Football Association will host playoff games in Clifton on Saturday, Nov. 7. The association is urging everyone interested in the future of football to participate and volunteer to help.

“We will need helpers in the press box, working the chains, concession stand, and cleanup after the game for about 30 minutes,” said spokesman Rick Wimmer. “Hosting these games the CYFA can go into the next season with a cushion in the bank and should be able to make needed improvements to the field down at the Bosque River Field.”

The freshman playoff games will be played in Meridian beginning at 9:30 a.m. with fourth-place Granview vs. first place Meridian. At 11:30 a.m., third place Venus will take on second-place Mayperarl.

Both junior and senior games will be played at Cub Stadium in Clifton, as follows:

Junior playoff games:

• 9:30 a.m. Seed #3 (Alvarado) vs. Seed #2 (Maypearl).

• 11:30 a.m. Seed #4 (Godley) vs. Seed #1 (Grandview).

Senior playoff games:

• 1:30 p.m. Seed #2 (Godley 1) vs. Seed #3 (Grandview 2)

• 3:30 p.m. Seed #4 (Maypearl) vs. Seed #1 (Clifton)

The wrap-up of the season is as follows:

The Clifton Youth Football Senior division team went undefeated this season with a perfect 8-0 season, earning them a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The first-round playoffs were held on Saturday in Glen Rose with Maypearl and Grandview 2 advancing to the next round.

In the past week the Clifton Freshmen made up a game with the Rio Vista Eagles with the Cubs spanking the Eagles 22-0. The Cubs were able to control the game with long drives and very stingy defense. The Cubs scored on their first possession of the games behind a very tough offensive line leading to a short touchdown run. Then the defense pushed the Eagles back on four straight plays and taking over on downs.

On offense Weston Schasteen got loose running around right end for another Clifton touchdown and making the halftime score 14–0. The Cubs were able to score once more in the second half on a better prepared Eagle defense, with Hayden Newton directing the offense for the second half and scoring on a short run.

On Saturday the Cub Freshmen went to Maypearl to play the Panthers in their final game of the season. The Panthers needed a win to secure their place in the playoffs and were not going to be denied a win. The Panthers scored first drive and scored often going to a 20–6 victory. Coach Mark Brandenberger said the Panthers were much bigger than the Cub team, “We were just out manned in this game. Our players grew in experience this year and will be much better next year.”

The Clifton Junior team went up the road to take on the Meridian Yellowjackets in old-town rivalry. The Cubs offense was able to move the ball and eliminated some of their costly turnovers, allowing the Cubs to get two touchdowns in the game. Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets had much more offense than the Cubs could handle and came up with a 30-12 victory.
