CLIFTON — The Clifton Cubs will be putting Tigers in their tank this Friday night as they hope to exhaust the visiting squad during gridiron action at Cub Stadium. The Hico Tigers (5-1, 2-1) are coming off a win over Bruceville-Eddy this past week (14-12) and the Clifton Cubs (3-3, 1-2) trapped the Bearcats to defeat Moody, 55-14. This will be the fourth conference bash for both squads in District 16-2A. Other teams vying for another win are stationed to play thusly: Bruceville-Eddy at Crawford, McGregor at Hamilton, and Troy at Moody.
So far this season, Hico won its first three pre-district games handily, against Eastland, Palmer, and Tolar, then suffered a 24-14 loss to McGregor in the conference opener. That was followed by a 42-0 victory over Moody and a 14-12 winover Bruceville-Eddy last week.
The Cubs opened their season with wins over Dublin and Axtell before falling to Little River Academy. In district action, the Cubs lost to Crawford 55-28 and to Hamilton 25-21 before retaliating with a 55-14 win over Moody last Friday. According to Clifton Athletic Director/Head Coach Shawn Bell, the Cubs are now 3-3 on the season and “ready for the rest.” “Hico is a much improved football team since the beginning of the season,” he said. “Coach (Keith) Wood does a greast job with them.” Bell was complimentary of the Cubs this past week, both on offense and defense. “The kids know they are going to have to give it their best,” he said. “They are energized and hungry, especially after the loss last year and the win last night. They are ready to get going and rolling.” Kickoff for Friday night’s homecoming game is at 7:30 p.m.
