Dog Rules Print E-mail
Monday, September 21 2009 12:02 pm
As I admitted in a previous column, I’ve become THAT WOMAN who lets her pets get away with too much. Zack’s worse than I, being even more soft-hearted. I wrote about the cats last time, so now the dog gets equal time.

The Sisterhood of Motherhood Print E-mail

When I was very young, I never thought I had much in common with other girls. We seemed to have different interests and convictions. Perhaps that’s what sent me far from home for so long.

Barter System Print E-mail
Wednesday, August 05 2009 12:28 pm
Ellis I was thinking that in these difficult economic times, it might be a good idea to reinstitute the barter economy that existed in times past. Zack’s father was telling us that during The Depression, their family always had plenty to eat.

I could use a couple hundred squash recipes. Anyone? When the garden comes in, it comes in with a vengeance. We didn’t have luck with everything we planted, but the squash is this year the gift that keeps on giving—-and giving—and giving.

Dirty Jobs Print E-mail
Wednesday, June 10 2009 06:41 pm

When we said hello to our neighbor the other day, he asked Zack, “What have you done today? What will she write about next week?!” Considering how dirty we were, he knew we’d been busy, as usual. Just before, we’d been in the hardware store. The young man there (who was on duty the day we broke the farm jack) greeted me with, “What have you been doing today?” This really meant, “Have you broken anything interesting?”

That Woman Print E-mail
Friday, September 11 2009 02:41 pm
Rustic Ramblings I swore this would never happen to me, but like many words I’ve eaten in the past, I choked on these. I’ve become THAT WOMAN who caters to her pets beyond sensible reason...

Typical Days Print E-mail
Saturday, August 29 2009 05:43 pm
Dr. Gene Ellis Last Saturday, our friend Ron was coming to site his gun at our “shooting range” (the side of an old gravel pit).  Zack expected me to shoot, too, and although I do enjoy it, I had errands to run, things to do. No one had asked ME if Saturday morning would be convenient for target practice.

Wild Life Print E-mail

We’ve seen a lot of wild life lately, even more than usual. I become very excited about this, having been well trained by Zack (and also by our friend Ron) to be alert and observant. I finally grew tired of them asking, “Didn’t you SEE that? You mean you didn’t SEE that?) I’m always proud of myself when I do spot something before Zack does, or at the same time. When I wax eloquent about all these sightings, I elicit a response from my daughter most times of, “That’s nice. I gotta go, Mom.” So I’ll tell YOU instead!

Sunflowers Print E-mail

The local farmer who has leased some fields from us in the past usually plants hay, wheat, corn, and so forth. When things are slow here in Texas or “off season”(or if he has a failed crop or whatever), he takes all his mega agribusiness equipment and a crew (and himself) to the Midwest for a few weeks to harvest sunflowers (and other things).
