When researching the various articles written about the controversial Battle of Dove Creek on Jan. 8, 1865, it is difficult to determine the true facts. “This fight between the combined forces of confederate troops and state militiamen and a band of Kickapoo Indians near Dove Creek in present Irion County, Texas, ranks among the most important battles of Indian warfare fought on Texas soil,” according to William C. Pool in The Battle of Dove Creek. |

The Confederate forces and state militia retreated to the south bank of Spring Creek where they camped on the night of Jan. 8-9, 1865. The wounded were carried to safety but the dead had been left unburied on the battle field. |

On June 27, 1854, in compliance with the act of the state legislature creating Bosque County on Feb. 4, 1854, Commissioners Lowry Scrutchfield, Jasper Mabry, S.S. Locker, William McCury, and William Gary met at the site of present Meridian and agreed that according to surveys this site, located near the center of the county, would become the county seat of Bosque County and named Meridian. |
