VALLEY MILLS — Dentists at Bosque Valley Family Dental in Valley Mills recently attended a training course on the placement of mini-implants. Dr. Joe Yarbro, Dr. Richard Hansard, and Dr.Jason New are all now certified to place these implants.

The mini-implants are not a conventional implant. They are mainly used to help secure a loose fitting denture. The implants are placed directly into the bone, most often on the lower jaw.

There are many advantages of using a mini-implant as opposed to a conventional one, said Dr. New. They are much less expensive, require less healing time, and can be used in smaller places where a conventional implant would not fit.

“It is a really simple procedure and in many cases we can attach the denture to the implants the same day.” said Dr. New.  The first step is a consult and x-ray to determine that enough bone is present to place the implants.

“One of the great things about these implants is that they can be placed in very little bone, where a conventional implant could not be placed” said Dr. New. During the procedure, four implants are placed and the stability of the implant is checked. If the stability is adequate then the denture can be attached the same day.

“We place metal housings in the denture that have o-rings inside of them. This allows us to just snap the denture onto the implants and helps secure them in place,” said Dr. New. “We believe that this new technology will really help people that have been struggling for years with a loose lower denture. People no longer have to worry about their denture shifting when they are eating or talking.” From start to finish, the entire procedure takes about two and a half hours.
