CLIFTON — Hundreds of local children will receive free bicycle helmets Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Goodall -Witcher Clinic parking lot.

The bicycle helmet giveaway is part of a statewide effort — Hard Hats for Little Heads — to help Texas children prevent head injuries and promote helmet safety in bicycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, and when riding scooters. The event is sponsored by Goodall -Witcher Healthcare Foundation, Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Texas Department of Transportation, and Texas Medical Association.

Any child can receive a free helmet. Volunteers will be on hand to properly fit  the helmets. A safety presentation and bike rodeo obstacle course will take place every 30 minutes.

Head injury is the most common cause of death and serious disability from bike crashes. Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent, yet only about 25 percent of cyclists wear one when they ride.
