 Mabel DowneyFuneral services for Mabel Downey, 104, of Meridian were held graveside at the Fairview Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, with the Rev. Richard Creech and Stephen O’Neal officiating.

Mabel O. Dorman was born on Aug. 19, 1905, in the Greenock community near Valley Mills. She passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

She was the first of nine children born to Edgar Sleet Dorman and Lulie Fay Crump Dorman.

On Aug. 20, 1925, she was united in marriage to Herbert L. (Hokie) Downey at Coon Creek.

She and her husband farmed in the Fairview community before moving to Lakeside Village in 1940 and then to Meridian in 1974.

She lived in Bosque County all her life and was a homemaker with many talents, including sewing, crocheting, quilting, and ceramic painting. She was a member of Meridian First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, Herbert (Hokie) Downey; brothers, George, Tony, Jack, and Gene Dorman; sister, Frances Stearnes; and grandchildren Joe Bob Law and Calvin Law.

Survivors include daughters, Dorothy Law and husband, Billy, of Meridian, and Mary Lou Strother and husband, Bill, of Tyler; granddaughters, Kathy O’Neal and Valorie Hedrick; grandson, Nelson Strother; great-grandchildren, Chris Law, Stephen O’Neal, Zach O’Neal, Taylor Hedrick, Brad Hedrick, Sam Hedrick, Sam Strother, and Emily Strother; great-great-grandchildren Caleb Law and Macy O’Neal; sisters, Ellen Nott of Houston, Faye Leaird of Santa Barbara, Calif.; brother, Edgar S. (Dugan) Dorman of Valley Mills; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Lawson Funeral Home of Meridian was in charge of arrangements.
