Emroy Knudson

Funeral services for Emroy “Nubbin” Knudson, 87, of Lorena, were held Saturday, June 13, 2009, in the Lawson Funeral Home Chapel in Meridian with the Rev. Joe Broadway officiating. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Walnut Springs.

Knudson was born on May 2, 1922, in Hamilton County, the third son and seventh child of Thomas Alfred and Emma Josephine Skramstad Knudson. He passed away on Monday, June 8, 2009, in a Waco nursing facility.

He was raised and educated in Cranfills Gap. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 and was medically discharged in 1945. He hitchhiked from New York back home in his uniform.

He moved to Houston to work in construction with his brother-in-law, Ray Grimland, and helped build skyscrapers in the Houston and coastal areas. He retired in 1978 and was a member of the Ironworkers Local Union #84 for 60 years.

He was married to Erline Brantley who preceded him in death. He later married Alvina Schraeder, who also preceded him in death, as well as siblings, Odell, Juliett, Amy, Vergie, Truman, Adeline, Mavis, and an infant brother. Although he had no children of his own, he enjoyed the family that Alvina brought to their marriage.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on his farm. He loved to go dancing with Alvina almost every weekend. He had a “green thumb” and kept his yards looking like a nursery.

Survivors include his step-children: Buddy and Betty Schraeder of Riesel, Harvey and Madeline Schraeder of Conroe, Doris and Terrald Weaver of Rex, Ga., and Elly and Bo Goldsmith of Lorena; 12 step-grandchildren and their families, as well as many nieces, nephews, two brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.

Pallbearers were Bobbie Swenson, Bryan Sowell, Dale Grimland, Buddy Schraeder, Harvey Schraeder, and Byron Weaver.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe Berl Williams, Joe Rickard, and Kevin Roznos.

Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Cemetery in Walnut Springs, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 6605 Sanger Ave., Waco 76712.

Lawson Funeral Home of Meridian was in charge of arrangements.
