CLIFTON — The annual Fish Fry Benefit for the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department is slated Saturday, July 4, beginning at 6 p.m., at the historic Womack Hall.

Sponsored by the Sons of Hermann Womack Lodge #135, the benefit supports the fire department and its equipment. The benefit begun in 2000, when Womack Lodge #135 felt compelled to help support the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department with funds for a new fire truck and equipment.

Lodge members felt the first fish fry was a good way for the lodge and the community to continue aiding the department in financing some of the on-going needs.

“We are aware of the strains put on VFD’s by the numerous grass fires, and the rising costs of fuel,” said Calvin Rueter, a member of the lodge. “Everyone is urged to respond generously when a fire department member asks one to make a donation for the tickets. We need to keep the CVFD in a strong position for any challenges they will face, either in the city or our rural areas.”

Along with funds raised by the community participation, new money is brought into the community from the Grand Lodge, Sons of Hermann, through a matching funds grant.

In 2007, the benefit raised $3,700, and in 2008, it raised $4,500, for the fire department,

A minimum donation of $7 is encouraged, with preschool children eating free. Tickets are available from any CVFD member, members of the Womack Lodge, and from Clifton Feed and Service Center.

Womack Hall is located off Hwy. 219, East, approximately five miles from Clifton.
