Meridian hosts tournament

By Brett Voss.

It’s always good to be home for the holidays. So with the Meridian boys and girls basketball teams host the annual Meridian Holiday Classic tournament Dec. 27-28, it could prove to be a late Christmas present for both teams. But first, both teams will take a much needed break. Interestingly, both Jacket and Lady Jacket squads have been struggling a bit while going through some growing pains. While both teams have a wealth of talent, the rosters are chalked full of young players trying to get their varsity feet under them before district competition begins in January.

Meridian hoop squads battle tough teams

By Brett Voss.

As both teams faced tough schedules in an attempt to prepare for their respective district races right after the holiday break, the Meridian boys and girls basketball teams appeared on the verge of a breakthrough. But while the Jackets managed to split a pair of games last week before the Christmas break began, the Lady Jackets came up short twice. After the Meridian boys opened the week with a 58-53 victory over Holland Dec. 17, the Jackets (4-8) dropped a hard-fought battle to Hamilton, 44-42, last Friday at Jacket Gymnasium.

Cubs open district with two victories

By Carol Spicer.

Traveling to Hamilton on Tuesday, the Clifton Cubs clawed the Bulldogs with a two point win, 46-44. The Cubs took a 14-11 first quarter but fell just under the Bulldogs in the second and third quarter – then came back with a 14-10 fourth quarter for the win. “It was a big win...All of them are big on the road,” said Coach Dodd Carmichael. “I thought the players played with a lot of heart. Now, we need to find a way to beat McGregor so we can go into the holidays 2-0 in district play.

Bragging rights

By Brett Voss.

Last week started well for the Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball team. But what begins well does not always end well, and such proved to be the case for the Jackets. After an emotional high as they stormed pass their Bosque County Class 2A counterpart Clifton, 54-35, in convincing fashion last Tuesday night, the Jackets were flat and struggled in the highly-competitive Hamilton Tournament last weekend.

Clifton places four on all-district team

By Brett Voss.

Although the Clifton Cubs battled for a playoff berth until the final gun of the 2013 Texas high school football season, it proved to be a matter of too little, too late. And in the process, their season came to an early and abrupt end for the eighth straight season. But their efforts to battle back and stay alive despite losing the first six games of the season did not go unrewarded. When the District 12-2A, Division I all-district selcetions were announced recently, the Cubs placed four players on the first-team, earned three second-team selections, and drew three honorable mentions.
