But even though first-year head coach Shawn Griffin will guide his squad against Bosque County arch rival Valley Mills as the second round of district opens Tuesday, all hope is not lost.

Jackets host leading Goldthwaite, then visit winless Hico Tigers Friday night

By Brett Voss.

Now that the Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball squad has posted its first District 12-1A, Division I victory, the Jackets feel ready to take on the best the league has to offer. After a disappointing district opening loss to San Saba at home last Tuesday night, the Yellowjackets rebounded to knock off DeLeon, 71-62, last Friday night to position themselves in the thick of the playoff race just in time to take on league-leading Goldthwaite Tuesday at Yellowjacket Gymnasium before traveling to Hico Friday night to take on the Tigers.

Lady Jackets look to snap losing streak against Goldthwaite, Hico

By Brett Voss.

After opening District 12-1A, Division I competition with a dramatic 60-51 victory over Bosque County arch rival Valley Mills Jan. 3, the Meridian Lady Jacket girls baasketball team has fallen on hard times, in more ways than one. The flu bug and foul trouble led to back-to-back losses to San Saba and DeLeon last week, dropping the Lady Jackets into a pack of four teams battling for position behind district leaders Goldthwaite and San Saba. And it won’t get any easier for the Meridian girls this week as they take on first place Goldthwaite Tuesday before traveling to Hico Friday night.

Lady Cubs grab two wins

By Carol Spicer.

Although a little slow to start the game, simply trading points throughout the first half, the Lady Cubs came out strong in the second half to win 56-46 over the Troy Lady Trojans. After going into the half down 23-24, the Lady Cubs came out in the second half determined to win – and it showed as they scored 19-16 in the third and 14-6 in the fourth quarters for the win. Scoring high for the Lady Cubs were Erica West with 19; Karlee Kleibrink and Kennadi Strawser with 11 each; Hope Harris, six; Marti Hanson, four; Maria Chavez, three; and Bobbie Sue Applegate, two. West hit the basket for 14 of 16 free throws.

After opening district with win, Lady Jackets host San Saba, visit DeLeon

By Brett Voss.

Coming off a solid performance in the annual Meridian Holiday Classic basketball tournament, the Meridian Lady Jacket girls basketball team opened distict in style last Friday night. And they did it on the road against their Bosque County arch rival, the Valley Mills Lady Eagles. Not bad for a late Christmas present. Behind the scoring combination of junior Morgan Poston and sophomore Ashlee Hooks, the Lady Jackets took a commanding halftime lead before holding off a fourth quarter rally to post a 60-51 victory in Valley Mills.
