Jackets knock off Hico, but fall to Valley Mills in overtime; Young Lady Jackets win finale

The Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball team pushed their chances beyond the final seconds of regulation in the final game of the season. But when the final horn went off, it just wasn’t meant to be, in more ways than one. The Jackets made the final game of the season meaningful by knocking off Hico, 54-33, last Tuesday night. But then, Meridian’s postseason fate lied in the combined need for a victory on the road against District 12-1A, Division II leader Valley Mills, while hoping that the league’s last place DeLeon could upset playoff-bound Goldthwaite.

Any hope of making the playoffs vanished last week with losses to DeLeon, 63-58, at home last Tuesday and eighth-ranked Goldthwaite, 52-36, on the road Friday.

When Bruceville-Eddy came to town on Tuesday, the Lady Cubs fell short, especially in the second quarter when they came up with no points, and fell to the Lady Eagles, 48-27. “Marti Hanson did a great job rebounding tonight,” said Coach Steven Bateson. “We got a lot of open looks, but we could not buy a bucket in the second quarter.” The team hit for only nine points in the first, third, and fourth quarters.

Two speed bumps, in fact. After wrapping up the first round of District 12-1A, Div. I competition with a disappointing 55-47 loss to Bosque County arch rival Valley Mills at home last Tuesday night, the Jackets suffered their second straight loss at San Saba, 47-35, last Friday night.
