Strawser, Brewer lead Lady Cub wins

Kennadi Strawser hit and pitched the Lady Cubs to a 16-0 victory over Hamilton on Tuesday, as she came up huge at the dish and in the circle. Kennadi racked up two RBI’s on two hits for Clifton. She singled in the second and third innings. Clifton’s Kennadi kept Hamilton off the scoreboard for all three innings she was on the rubber. She pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out four.

Lady Cubs battle at Granbury Tourney

Traveling to the Granbury Tournament. Thursday through Saturday, the Lady Cubs won three and lost three. They beat Glen Rose, Midland Greenwood, and Springtown; but lost to Granbury, Comanche and Joshua. In game one against Granbury on Thursday, Marti Hanson went 2-2, but Clifton still fell to Granbury 8-6 in seven innings. Emily Brewer shut down Granbury while she was on the rubber. Emily held Granbury hitless over four relief innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out three.

Jackets named to all-district

The Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball team took their playoff chances into the final game of the season. And even though they fell just short of their goal of returning to the Class 1A, Division I tournament, the Jackets were recognized for their efforts. Sophomores Jarett Carpenter and Ethan Hightower where named to the District 12-1A- Dvision I first team, while sophomore Bailey Bowers shared the district’s sixth man of the year award with Goldthwaite sophomore Hunter Parrish.

Meridian baseball, softball struggle

After opening the season with a victory last week, the Meridian baseball squad fell on hard times at the Blooming Grove tournament last week, dropping three straight. “Overall, we gained some great experience this weekend,” Meridian baseball head coach Robert Barber said. “We have a lot still to learn, and we still have to find consistency on the mound.” Likewise, the Meridian Lady Jackets continued to struggle in tournament play, losing their sixth straight game after a solid start to the season in the Bruceville-Eddy Tournament two weeks ago.

Lady Jackets make all-district

Despite taking their lumps as a young team in a very tough district, the Meridian Lady Jackets were recognized for their efforts in the District 12-1A, Division I race. Lady Jacket junior Cassidy Menger was named to the first-team, while junior Sonya Mendoza and sophomore Ashlee Hooks made the second team for Meridian (3-7 in district, 13-16 overall.

Diamond Cutting

Opening the 2014 Texas high school baseball season at home Monday night, the Meridian Yellowjackets greeted first-year head coach Robert Barber with a welcome gift - his 100th career victory as a head coach. The Jackets held off a persistent Abbott squad to post a season-opening 10-8 victory at Yellowjacket Field Monday night, giving Barber his first victory in Meridian, but his 100th as a head baseball coach. Sophomore Ethan Hightower started on the mound and delivered three solid innings while striking out six to earn the victory. Senior Nick Prestwood came in to relieve before freshman Bradley Wallace tossed two innings for the save.

Cubs baseball off to winning start

The Clifton Cubs started the baseball season with a 18-2 run rule victory over the visiting Hillsboro Eagles on Tuesday, Feb. 18, despite a 1-0 first inning deficit. The Cubs fell behind early but used a big 14 run second inning to put the game away,” said Coach Brian Slater. “The big hit in the inning was a three-run triple by Collin Schasteen.” The second inning seemed never-ending as runner after runner kept flashing over home plate. Zach Potts got the start on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings striking out seven and earning his first win of the year.

Lady Cubs take 2nd in Glen Rose

In an exciting week, the Lady Cubs won five of six games at the Glen Rose Tournament last week. On Thursday, the team got a 4-2 win over Mineral Wells when Emily Brewer carried the Lady Cubs to a 4-2 victory with a strong game at the plate and in the circle. Brewer was solid at the plate going 2-3, driving in one and scoring two runs. Clifton would not relinquish the lead as Mineral Wells was unable to weather a three to one fourth inning deficit.

Shining moment for U.S.A.

Despite all of the expectations, all of the failures, all of the disappoints for Team U.S.A. at the 22nd Winter Olynmpics in Sochi, Russia, a bright shining light emerged from the darkness Monday as hopes for a silver lining remains. For the Americans, name after name has disappeared into oblivion, failing to make regular appearances on the podium -- Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White, Evan Lysacek, Julia Mancuso, Bode Miller and Shani Davis.

New Beginnings

As the Meridian High School baseball and softball teams took to their respective fields to begin practicing for the upcoming seasons last week, both teams did so with new coaches providing the guidance. And while both coaches bring a fair share of experience and success to their new squads, Jacket baseball head coach Robert Barber and Lady Jacket softball head coach Leslie Partridge inherit young teams that could prove to be diamonds in the rough.
