New Beginnings

Ready or not, it all starts now. After playing their final scrimmage before the start of the 2014 Texas high school football regular season begins, the Meridian Yellowjackets and first-year head coach Chris Roberts had one more week of practice to get ready. And following a controlled and live action scrimmage against Class 3A, Division II Rio Vista at Jacket Stadium last Thursday, Roberts was glad they had another week to work on things.

Hunting season tradition

With the traditional opening of hunting season just around the corner, outdoorsmen across the state will begin next week with a bang. Most don’t usually look forward to Mondays, but Texas dove hunters will be making an exception this year. The traditional Sept. 1 dove season opening day in the North and Central Zones falls on Labor Day Monday.

Cubs host West in 2014 season opener

The Clifton Cub football fans that braved the heat on Thursday night last week saw some things to be really excited about. After the Cubs had looked competitive against a preseason top 20 ranked team in a class above them, they looked dominating at times against Texas Football’s number 4th ranked team in the division just below Clifton.

Lady Cubs knock off Blum, 25-12, 25-17, 25-13

The Lady Cubs hosted Blum volleyball on Aug. 19, with Clifton taking the win in three games; 25-12, 25-17 and 25-13. Emily Brewer showed her strength with three aces, seven kills, and 17 digs, while Tori Zander came up with one ace and 11 digs.

Jackets look good in season’s first test

GORMAN - If the first scrimmage of the 2014 Texas high school football season can serve as an indicator, the Meridian Yellowjackets will look like an entirely different team under new head coach Chris Roberts. Displaying a balanced and efficient offensive attack while delivering an aggressive and effective defense, the Jackets easily outshined Gorman, 3-0, last Friday evening.

Caniford’s Cubs pass season’s first test

Clifton Cub football fans were introduced to the 2014 high school football team on Friday night at Cub Stadium in a scrimmage against the Glen Rose Tigers. “Overall I was pleased with what we did in our first scrimmage,” said Clifton head coach Chuck Caniford. “We have a lot of areas where we can improve but our effort was very good and we played physical at times.”

Lady Cubs off to solid start to volleyball season

Hosting the annual Clifton Alexis Enriquez Memorial Volleyball Tournament last week, the home town Lady Cubs beat Hillsboro on Tuesday in four games, 25-22, 25-12, 24-26, and 25-20. Lead by newly named Coach Jason Williams, the Lady Cubs are fired up for the season.

Let’s go, black & gold

Cheer, chant, dance and twirl is all they want to do, as long as their idols do it with them. Twenty-five young girls pre-K – fifth grade got the chance to be with their Varsity Cheerleader idols for three days last week during Mini Cheer Camp.

Under new head coach Chris Roberts

Under new head coach Chris Roberts, the Meridian Yellowjackets took to the field in full pads for the first time last week for the 2014 Texas high school football season, featuring a balanced offensive attack through the air and on the ground, while showing solid defensive potential.
