Shirley Barker McPherson

Services were conducted at the First Baptist Church of Clifton for Shirley McPherson, 79, on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Dr. Jerry Smith will be leading in the service with Clifton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Shirley Barker was born on July 16, 1935 in Dallas, Texas. She was an only child born to Cecil and Travis “Honey”  Barker. She grew up primarily in the Waco area and attended Waco schools, graduating from Waco High School. She met L.E. Mac McPherson, a young Air Force flyboy, while he was stationed in San Antonio. A courtship followed, and they were married on April 7, 1953 at Calvary Baptist Church in Waco.  This occurred prior to her graduation from High School. The young couple moved numerous times in their lifetime due to Mac’s work as computer data analyst. The couple made their homes in Arizona, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and Washington State. Two sons were born to their marriage Gary and Bruce.

Carroll Joe Pierson

Carroll Joe Pierson was born April 10, 1929 to J.B. and Lillian (Canuteson) Pierson. He is the great grandson of Ole  and Anne Pierson (1854) and Christian and Johanna Canuteson (1858), Norwegian immigrants who settled near and helped to develop the Norse Community and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He was very proud and knowledgeable of his Norwegian heritage. He had one brother, Jean Lloyd Pierson and his wife Doris. Joe attended Turkey Creek ISD, which he affectionately referred  to as “TCU” (Turkey Creek University) for five years  and after “TCU” consolidated, he attended and graduated from Clifton High School in 1946. At age seventeen, he and several classmates joined the United States Marine Corp completing Boot Camp in San Diego.   He was assigned to the First Marine Division and served in the occupation of China during World War II in Tienstin, China and then to Guam with the First Brigade where he completed his tour.

Loy Burgess

Loy Burgess of Pearland passed away on Monday, April 27, 2015 at the age of 87. She was born to Thomas Enoch Gaskill and Ida Mae Hill Gaskillon on Aug. 15, 1927 in Ector, Texas. Funeral services for Loy Burgess were held May 1, 2015, at the chapel of South Park Funeral Home in Pearland. Loy graduated from Van Alstyne High School. She worked at Paramount Film Company and Southwestern Bell where she retired in 1978. She married William Olen Burgess on July 10, 1948 in Seagoville Texas. They were married for sixty-four years. Loy and  Olen were owners of Beachland Lodge at Lake Whitney Texas for 29 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Enoch and Ida Mae;her husband, Olen Burgess; son, Gary Burgess; sisters, Verna Mae Carney, Jean Raifsnider, Mary Loyce Williams; brothers, Floyd Gaskill, Mansel Gaskill, Ray Gaskill, Carl Gaskill, and W.L. Gaskill.
