Funeral services for Richard Steven “Dick” Owens, 66, of Valley Mills were held Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Clifton with Pastor Justice Reed officiating. Interment was at Clifton Cemetery. Owens passed away at home on Saturday, June 14, 2014. He was born on Jan. 2, 1948, at Hillcrest Hospital, the first of four boys of O.O. and Doris Owens. He lived in Waco and attended Crestview Elementary prior to the family moving to Valley Mills in the early 1960’s. His childhood in Valley Mills was full of activities including school, football, baseball, hay hauling, and wonderful friendships. He was a 1966 graduate of Valley Mills High School, and a 1970 graduate of Texas A&M University. On June 20, 1970 he married his high school sweetheart, Billye Carol Sanders of Mosheim. They had a son, Steven Kyle, and a daughter, Stacy Lee. After college, he worked as a mechanical engineer at Frymire Engineering in Dallas, where he obtained his Professional Engineer license. In 1977, he moved back to Waco where he owned is own mechanical engineering company, Waco Systems, Inc. Living in Waco, the family enjoyed and relaxed at their farm near Mosheim – and if time allowed, the mountains of Colorado. In 1988, he built a home in Mosheim and the family moved to the country. He sold his company in 2008 to Brandt Engr, working there for three years. In 2011, he worked at Capstone Mechanical where he said work was fun and enjoyable. He especially enjoyed being a mentor to the many young engineers at Capstone – sharing his 40-plus years of engineering experiences and knowledge. In 1999, he transferred his church membership from Waco to the First United Methodist Church of Clifton. He served as a lead usher and on many committees, using his God given talent for fixing things around the church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Willie and Lee Sanders; a brother, Randy; and a nephew, Michael. Survivors include his wife, Billye Carol; son, Steven and wife, Jennifer; grandson, Braden and granddaughter, Cora Grace of Hewitt; daughter, Stacy of Mosheim; brothers, Bob and Ronny; Kay of Valley Mills; sister-in-law, Sandrea Woens of Edmond, OK; an aunt, Martha; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Jim Broyles of Mesquite; and nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his church family. Pallbearers were Steven and Braden Owens, Phill Bowers, Stefan Le Row, Don Whitney. Honorary pallbearers were Capstone Mechanical team and WSI employees, along with Cardio-Rehab buddies. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First United Church Clifton, or Valley Mills ISD Education Foundation. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
