The Meridian Yellowjacket football players will take their first step toward preparing for the 2013 Texas high school football season when the Clifton Medical Clinic offers free physicals Thursday from 5-7:30 p.m.

And then in just a little over two weeks, the Jackets will open their pre-season two-a-day workouts Aug. 5.

As a courtesy to all student athletes in the county, the Clifton Medical Clinic will provide athletic physicals free of charge as all incoming seventh, ninth and 11th graders will need one to participate in UIL sports during the 2013-14 school year.

"It's a service provided by the Clifton Medical Clinic for area kids and we get the word out," Meridian football head coach and athletic director Todd Doughty said. "We appreciate their efforts in helping our kids and local families with the cost."

When Meridian high school football players converge at Jacket Stadium Aug. 5 to begin workouts in shorts at 7 a.m., the new UIL contact rules will go into affect. While no contact can begin before each athlete has gone through four days of workouts without helmets and pads, the new rule will limit the amount of contact that takes place in the pre-season for the first time ever.
