City concerns: water quality, code enforcement

Several items were discussed at length during the regular Feb. 11 Meridian City Council meeting, even though they were not specifically stated on the agenda. They were the city’s water quality, code enforcement and derelict properties. Mayor Johnnie Hauerland wanted to discuss the city’s proactive stance in all three matters. The past year, the Trihalomethane levels in the Meridian’s water lines exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Levels set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Even though the slightly elevated levels are not dangerous and do not pose a threat to public health, the City is obligated to inform its residents and proactively seek solutions
to lowering the levels
